Directory Submitter
Brad Callen's Directory Submitter released by his Bryxen Software in 2007, is, like his Article Submitter, another major time-saver for the aspiring internet marketer. The question is, though, who or what is a directory?
Well, back in the old days, a few years before the the turn of the century, search engines were pretty unsophisticated and the results that they threw up were wildly erratic. People relied to a certain extent on:
-
recommended links that a webmaster might suggest his site visitors surf to (the core of Bryxen's sensational SEO Elite software) &
-
directories, which were sites viewed, catalogued and recommended by humans, often respected humans. Early directories included Yahoo, DMOZ & Joe Ant with multiple general categories and hundreds that existed for specific categories. The Blogosphere is presently in a similar position now
Ten years later and search engines are far more sophisticated and though far less likely to manipulated than the humans behind directories (simply because spiders can view thousands of pages quickly, whereas humans can't) but search engines still respect the human touch.
To be a respected directory is usually rewarded with good page rank, often PR 4-9...and to be categorized within one of their pages can often get you a PR 3-7 link. To receive such a link is considered by the search engines to be a considerable vote of confidence for for your site...and as a result, you'll probably receive a higher search engine ranking. While a number of the directories charge for the listing (Yahoo charges $299 for submission...with no guarantee of being listed) many others are still FREE.
Directory Submitter takes advantage of this by automating the process of submission to those directories as much as possible. It's not all automatic, unfortunately, you will have to manually go to each directory and create an account in many of them.
Fortunately, the details are then all set for your subsequent submissions, so, if you have a number of sites or are planning to have more, Directory Submitter is a no-brainer. Who would turn down free links from top quality sites? As far as I'm concerned, it's search engine spider Heaven.
N.B.: The links from the directories are, of course, only pointing to your home page. If you want links pointing deep into your site, you may consider:
However, to use Directory Submitter as well as those tactics is, I believe, a real winner! As with all Bryxen's software, it's wonderfully intuitive to work with and provides excellent video instruction. I could describe the whole process but, honestly, the video does it so much better:
