Article Marketing
If you haven't heard about Article Marketing, it's probably because it's only a reasonably recent new branch of internet marketing in which, essentially, there are four forms:
1 writing articles for submission to article banks like Ezinesarticles.com which, if they're re-published on other sites, direct traffic back to your site through an author's link in the bio-box at the end of your article.

Turn Words
Into Traffic
The first and most famous Internet Marketing book on this process was Jim Edwards' marvellous Turn Words Into Traffic.
Jim's now a syndicated columnist, releasing high-priced internet marketing How-To courses and videos (including a $97m membership site) but this, the first article marketing ebook, was where it all began, not long after he had been declared bankrupt.
The link embedded in the book graphic doesn't take you to a sales page but goes instead to an article and then a video which details just how well articles have worked to establish Jim's business over the years.
I really like his earnest style (although his Camtasia drawing skills are awful!) and recommend Jim as a great tutor for article marketing.
N.B.: You can also see more of this easy, natural speaker in a video chatting with famed Internet Marketer, Stephen Pierce, about List Building.

If your articles articles are of insight and quality, they'll eventually enable you to brand yourself as an expert and will eventually not only provide your site with traffic, they will also probably greatly improve your search engine rankings, which will bring further long-term traffic.
2 Another profitable way of using articles is through Bum Marketing, in which you disguise your article as an impartial review or a general article and recommend a product (via an affiliate link) in the bio box
3 As a webmaster, using those articles on content sites, sometimes because it's a great article but...usually in the hope that visitors click on Adsense. I've covered this in a little more detail at...
4 Private Label Rights (about halfway down the page). These sites provide articles and content that you can chop up, rearrange and make appear as your own. I've discussed them as a part of Niche Marketing

How To Write Articles
It would be folly to assume that writing articles is easy. It isn't and most articles don't get read or valued because not enough thought has gone into their conception and not enough skill has gone into their writing.
I've been a fan of Karen Thackston's for many years now, and consider her training about writing to be ideal for turning an average writer into an exceptional one.
I wholeheartedly recommend her copywriting course and believe that if you apply her principles, your articles will get you a far greater return than you could have hoped for and you'll find the investment quickly pays for itself many times over.
Further, Karen understands SEO and will teach you how to write SEO copy that reads well...thereby attracting FREE search engine traffic to whatever you want to promote.
If you're genuinely interested in article marketing, Karen's should be your first stop...

while the general public may frown upon insider trading, I've always had a certain amount of sympathy for those top-dollar white-collar crooks. In terms of article marketing, though, you may consider reading this article about what sort of article scores best on DIGG.
